Jackie Chou

The Trojan Shrine at USC

I walked daily

on my way to classes

past the bronze warrior

whose chest

glowed in the sun

helmet

shield

and sword

pointed upward

I was neither too smart

nor too ugly

not superior

to anyone

in my aloneness

with my downcast eyes

There was no glory

in the fact

that our lives

never intersected

even in the center

of campus

where crowds gathered

with spirit and pride
